Bertus Basson was named Eat Out San Pellegrino & Aqua Panna Chef of the Year in 2019. His food philosophy roots traditional South African culture in a modern outlook. Since opening his first restaurant as chef-owner in 2007, he has built a celebrated family of establishments including Chorus, Eike, Kantien, and Spek & Bone. A firm believer in fresh, local, and sustainable ingredients, Bertus sees his work as a responsibility to express South African heritage through food. He is also a popular television personality (In Die Sop, Sjefhuis, Kokkedoor) and was a guest speaker at Austria’s International Rolling Pin convention in 2023.
